Mindful Musings: Relations

Ireland

There’s been a quiet but powerful realization moving through me lately about how I used to relate to people—and how that is shifting.

I can see now that, for a long time, when others felt uncomfortable around my confidence, my joy, or my expansion, I would instinctively contract. I would soften myself, explain myself, over-attune, or take responsibility for emotions that were never mine to carry. Not because I was dishonest—but because I learned early that keeping connection sometimes required shrinking.

It was a form of care. And also, a form of self-abandonment I didn’t fully recognize at the time.

What’s different now is not that I’ve stopped caring about people’s feelings—it’s that I’m no longer willing to disappear inside them.

I’m noticing a new kind of relational energy emerging in my life. Friendships where mutual inspiration is allowed. Where celebration is not met with tension, but with recognition. Where confidence doesn’t translate into threat, but into resonance. Where we can be fully ourselves and sometimes even be triggered—and still stay connected without distortion or collapse.

I’m learning what it feels like to not dim in order to belong.

And I’m also learning that the relationships that are meant for me don’t require that dimming. They invite expansion. They allow honesty. They make space for growth without punishment.

This feels like a kind of emotional reorientation—less about managing others’ reactions, and more about staying aligned with my own truth while allowing others to reveal their capacity.

I don’t see it as cutting people off or judging the past.

I see it as evolution.

A quieter kind of freedom. A more honest kind of connection. A self that doesn’t leave the room in order to be loved.

And I think I’m just getting started.

Resonated with this heavily..

At one point in time I wasn't even aware that I was dimming myself, or changing myself for other people's comfort..

I know I'm not perfect. But I use to make other people's opinions and unease with me a priority to ruminate in..

When I fully understood that a lot of relational unease stems from people's "perception" of us, themselves, and reality..

I now laugh at the absurdity
